ICK Fest — BOLERO © Paul Sixta

|
|
Dear {{firstname}} {{lastname}},
We Are Volcanoes.
In a charged 1986 lecture, Ursula Le Guin put it plainly. She spoke of the language of power that dictates, versus a language of connection. It turned into an appeal to let that latent human connectedness erupt.
We carry her lecture with us as a small keepsake while we continue our research into L.A.V.A.. What smoulders beneath the surface, until the body finally erupts?
We return to the foot of Mount Etna in Catania, bringing with us WE, the BREATH and the dance film Blasphemy Rhapsody.
What will erupt later is The Artists Are Present at Frascati Theatre, with this year’s subtitle: “And Have No Shame.” Shedding shame is a painful necessity in order to arrive at something essential. Thais Di Marco, Lucinda Wessels, and Liza Sulaiman do so — and ICK does so once again, shamelessly.
Nothing about spring, then? Well, spring has already begun with a vibrant ICK Fest – thank you, dear visitors. If that was any indication, a fertile year lies ahead.

Catania
— WE, The BREATH & Blasphemy Rhapsody in Italy

The international collaboration with Compagnia Zappalà Danza provides an impetus for further exchange:
Both the performance WE, the BREATH and the film Blasphemy Rhapsody will be presented in April/May at Scenario Pubblico, Zappalà’s home base.
The dance film Blasphemy Rhapsody was created when the coronavirus brought the world to a standstill. In an empty theatre, under the constraints of lockdown and curfew, filmmaker Arno Dierickx crafted a blasphemous cinematic interpretation of what might otherwise have become a stage performance.

Looking back: ICK Fest 2026
— back-to-back: old, new, different

On March 28, the annual ICK Fest took place for the 8th time at De Meervaart.
While Collectief MAMM opened the evening with RUIM, the temperature was rising backstage, where the young dancers of ICK Next were warming up — ready to soon join the ensemble on equal footing. Ahead of them lay a formidable challenge: the Double Bill F.A.S.L. فاصل & BOLERO. A preview of a new work alongside a reworking of a piece that has since become a classic within the ICK repertoire.
As F.A.S.L. فاصل continues to take shape between the Maghreb and Europe, BOLERO sparked a sense of recognition for part of the audience, and a revelation for others. In any case, it culminated in a standing ovation.
F.A.S.L. فاصل will return to Tunisia this summer — Dutch audiences will have to wait just a little longer.

The Artists Are Present. And Have No Shame.
— Shamelessly radical human resistance

On May 19 & 20 it’s time for the newest edition of The Artists Are Present!
Artists connected to ICK Dans Amsterdam take over Frascati for two days of shedding shame. Powerful and vulnerable, performers reveal their bodies as they are. Dancing bodies reach out to one another, resist war, question gender, and enter into relationships with AI.
Let yourself be shamelessly carried away by performances from Thais Di Marco, Lucinda Wessels, Liza Sulaiman, and Emio Greco & Pieter C. Scholten, and discover Intuition Machine by ICK Collective.

Continuation of the ROCCO/ROCCA tour
— Roiling bodies of boxer and dancer
ROCCO/ROCCA resumes its Dutch tour and will be presented in, among others, Roosendaal, Leeuwarden, and Amersfoort. Selected performances will be preceded by an introduction, offering further insight into how this boxing/dance work became both timely and gender-transcendent, with its enduring exploration of the complexity of brotherly love.

L.A.V.A.: We Are Vulcanoes
— Side stepping to other vulcanoes
L.A.V.A. = lava, a metaphor for eruption.
In our research into L.A.V.A., the new international co-production with Compagnia Zappalà Danza premiering this summer, we invite you into the making and thinking process—into chance discoveries and associations that rise to the surface.
In 1986, Ursula Le Guin delivered a lecture that became an important reflection on the language and structures of power, titled We Are Volcanoes. While the feminist context of the 1980s has shifted significantly, we found within it a strikingly contemporary dynamic.

SPACE FOR DANCE ART
Volunteers in the picture
— Monika Lovas
ICK Dans Amsterdam would not be the same without its volunteers. With great enthusiasm, they provide the essential support during performances and events. At the recent ICK Fest, you could once again spot them—busy guiding audiences, working the merchandise desk, or ensuring everything ran smoothly behind the scenes.
We occasionally put them in the spotlight during a special gathering day, offering free workshops, exclusive behind-the-scenes access to ICK’s spaces and offices, and the opportunity to connect with one another and with ICK staff.
What moves them?
This month, we ask Monika Lovas, who has followed the work of Emio Greco for 20 years—and suddenly found herself in his class. “I truly had a pinch-me moment. Some dreams do come true.”

We Dance Together: messages from the studio
— In conversation with Elisa Zuppini
Dancer/choreographer Elisa Zuppini has been leading a new series of We Dance Together since March. Originally conceived to bring together dance enthusiasts of all kinds—trained or untrained, from the neighbourhood or the academy—it has grown into an increasingly popular and accessible known secret: a place where you can encounter the practices of diverse choreographers and emerging makers.
We spoke with Zuppini about her experience teaching these sessions. What is it like for her to work with such a mixed group?
“a new and enriching experience for me because of the way the practice lands differently and is embodied by each attendee.”

Intuition Machine: the next phase
— The digital light body

During the upcoming The Artists Are Present festival at Frascati Theatre (May 19 & 20), Intuition Machine will be presented once again, in its most recent iteration. With the support granted by Cultuurloket DigitALL, the team has been able to initiate a new phase of development.
In March, the team gathered with Jorrit Tamminga (HKU University of the Arts Utrecht) and Frédéric Bevilacqua (IRCAM) for the kick-off. From April 6 to 10, work will continue at Space for Dance Art on how “the digital light body” reads and interprets movement, and how the analysis of movement enters into dialogue with sound.

GUEST ARTISTS
Himalaya
— Early work by Elisa Zuppini

On April 30 and May 1, Elisa Zuppini brings back the first work she created after graduating from SNDO to the stage of Frascati Theatre.
The performance premiered during ICK Fest 2022 and was thoroughly reworked in 2023 for the Feeling Curious? Festival at Theater Rotterdam.
In Himalaya, the body takes centre stage, with attention to what it feels and desires. Reality is approached as a network in which everything is interconnected. Zuppini focuses on forces that oppose one another, and on the attraction to bring them together—viewed from within the body itself.

GUEST ARTISTS
Sabbath
— Queerness & Witchery
In 2024, Niek Wagenaar was in residence within ICK’s New Adventures programme, where he created a first version of Sabbath. The performance is an ode to the outsider, a celebration of queerness and the power of witchcraft. In this dance work, Wagenaar and his dance company Nymphs revisit the traditional image of the witch. The witch is no longer a figure of fear and exclusion, but a symbol of empowerment, resistance and self-discovery.
The performance returns to the stage: 24 April in Amsterdam.

GUEST ARTISTS
The Obsessors
— Exorcism Show

This ICK co-production with provocateur, director, and Roma -and queer- artist Thais Di Marco is inspired by the ancient Umbanda ritual of “desobsessão”. In this Brazilian practice, people are freed from “lost souls” believed to trigger obsessive behaviour. These rituals take place weekly in public sessions.
For The Obsessors, Thais Di Marco uses their method Retelling Structures, in which well-known stories are shifted and re-enacted. Through humour and sharp theatrical interventions, space emerges to reveal social conflicts — and perhaps to release them as well.
The performance can be seen on 17 & 18 April in Frascati – Amsterdam!

Collectief MAMM
— RUIM on Tour

The new performance RUIM by Collectief MAMM will be presented in various theatres throughout May.
One reviewer already found themselves running out of adjectives: dazzling musicality, virtuosity in movement, and effortless humour.
RUIM is a performance about the maddening housing crisis. Four twenty-somethings search for a way forward through raw acrobatics and boundless imagination.
You can experience the performance in May in cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, and Alkmaar.

ABCDAIRE
|
Vulcano /vɒlˈkeɪnəʊ/
noun.
The mountain beneath which something smoulders. A mountain with no summit, but with a crater that reminds us that years of stillness are not a sign of silence. A sudden and unexpected eruption is to be expected. Like the body, which can store tension for years, only to release everything at once. The unexpected irresistable urge to erupt without warning is to be expected.
