Dear {{firstname}} {{lastname}},
While warm ashes still swirl around our heads, summer beckons.
After a blazing end to the season—culminating in two premieres of L.A.V.A.: a spectacular open-air performance in Pompeii, followed by a thunderous first performance at Julidans in Amsterdam — our dancers and makers are ready to spread their wings. Off to festivals, holidays, or a home elsewhere.
Or so it seems…
At Space for Dance Art, the buzz continues a little longer. As we prepare for World Pride, we’re opening our doors to neighbours and dignitaries, to proud optimists and birds of paradise.
Meanwhile, the developers of Intuition Machine are keeping their cool. Defying the summer heat, they’re entering the next phase of development, rebuilding the Machine once again this week at Meervaart.
Before we head into summer, we’d also like to take a bow for the guest artists who enriched ICK this season with their work: Sedrig Verwoert, Elisa Zuppini, Fernando Troya, Collectief MAMM, Mixed Signal, and Thais Di Marco.
And when, towards the end of summer, the city —and your body— have finally cooled down, we’ll be back to reignite the fire with the Dutch tour of L.A.V.A..

L.A.V.A.: From Pompeii to Amsterdam
— A heated journey from magma to ashes

On 26 June, the moment had finally arrived: the special preview of L.A.V.A. at the Teatrum Mundi, set in the heart of the archaeological park of Pompeii. Against the extraordinary backdrop of this ancient Roman city, around 1,250 people gathered for the first presentation of a searing, high-energy performance by the dancers of Compagnia Zappalà and ICK.
There was little time to bask in the applause. Travelling by bus, train and plane, both companies headed straight to Amsterdam, where the official world premiere took place on 3 July at Meervaart. From the vast open-air arena of Pompeii to the black box of an Amsterdam theatre, L.A.V.A. took on a new form.
The journey has begun. This autumn, L.A.V.A. will tour the Netherlands and Italy. Visit our website for the full tour schedule.
L.A.V.A. is accompanied by The Friction Field, a digital publication inviting you to explore the fields through which the performance moves. A space for background stories, documentation and artistic inspiration, The Friction Field can be found at www.lavalive.nl and www.lavalive.it.

A Fond Farewell to ICK Next
— partir c'est mourir un peu
With dedication and conviction, the dancers of the Junior Company who completed ICK’s training programme this year performed as an integral part of both F.A.S.L., L.A.V.A. and DONS. Alongside their personal artistic development, they took on fully-fledged roles in these productions—a true leap into the deep end.
To mark the end of their time at ICK, this remarkable group of NEXT dancers presented a series of moving solo performances. We now bid farewell to Emma Shelly, Emma Tshitenge, Gabriella Larosa, William Philbert and Dante Gonzalez.
Thank you for your commitment, your courage and everything you brought to ICK. We wish you every success in the next chapter of your artistic journey.

Fiona Yau
In September 2025, Taiwanese dancer Fiona Yau joined ICK Next. We are delighted to announce that, from the 2026–27 season onwards, Fiona will become a member of the ICK Ensemble.
Welcome, Fiona!

ICK & PRIDE
— Space For Dance Art becomes Hub @ WorldPride

As a proud host of World Pride 2026, ICK is delighted to welcome an exciting line-up of artists to Space for Dance Art.
Until 7 August, you can visit The Pretending, the ongoing exhibition by Robbin Veldman, exploring the intersection of AI and oil painting. Check our website for opening hours.
From 13 to 17 July, don’t miss She said Mi Djaso, a compelling exhibition by Jameyne Tol, tracing a personal journey through Surinamese roots and queer identity.
On 10 July, KALEIDO kicks off the live programme with Dé Auditie – Call for Auditions! A performance in which you have already been selected as an audition candidate. Expect an overconfident jury and a series of wonderfully absurd challenges…
On 11 July from 7:30 pm, join us for performances by Lucinda Wessels and Thais Di Marco. Then, on 29 July, take a seat for The Main Characters Podcast LIVE, where hosts Tony de Wilde and Marco Hohl tackle life’s serious—and seriously funny—questions.
And of course, there will be drinks and music throughout. We look forward to welcoming you!

ACADEMY
The year of the Academy
— Academy in the picture
Behind the scenes, the ICK Academy is developing pioneering projects that advance dance in its broadest sense—from education and knowledge transfer to heritage preservation and artistic research. Alongside safeguarding and sharing ICK’s movement practice through workshops and training programmes, the Academy also contributes to international projects at the forefront of technological innovation.
With the continued development of Intuition Machine, part of that research is now becoming visible in a performative form. Much of the work, however, takes place away from the spotlight: in studios, closed working sessions and university classrooms, where ideas are tested, shared and refined.
As the season comes to a close, we’d like to share a few snapshots of the Academy—because the work behind the scenes deserves the spotlight, too.

Students visiting
— Dance Students from Peabody Conservatorium
For the second time, dance students from the Peabody Institute -part of John Hopskins University- visited ICK for an intensive study programme.
Over the course of a week, they immersed themselves in ICK’s artistic practice through Double Skin / Double Mind workshops, repertoire sessions, lectures, and access to ICK’s media library, where film screenings and a wide range of supporting literature deepened their understanding of the company’s work.
Armed with both theoretical knowledge and first-hand experience of the movement vocabulary, one of the highlights of their visit was attending the dress rehearsal of L.A.V.A..

Presentation Intuition Machine
— Intuition Machine at Meervaart

Intuition Machine is rapidly evolving.
Composed of hundreds of LED lights, the installation creates a mesmerising presence that not only renders the body in a new dimension, but—through motion capture and AI—can also anticipate the body’s next movement.
Intuition Machine is on view in the Blue Hall at Meervaart from 10–12 July, daily between 5:30 and 6:30 pm.
Register and be amazed!

Ash [ash]
noun
What remains after fire. What preserved an ancient Roman city beneath a thick blanket. A symbol of humility. A reminder that we, too, will return to dust. Bowie sang of ashes because even superheroes have their flaws.
Ash is what settles after we’ve spent ourselves in dance beneath Vesuvius. And ash is what our rested bodies will rise from when summer comes to an end.
