Amsterdam is heating up, temperatures in Pompeii are already hovering around 30°C, and in the studio bodies are becoming heat-resistant through the daily rehearsals for L.A.V.A.
For the final sprint towards the world premiere of L.A.V.A. on 3 July at Julidans, we have temporarily traded Amsterdam for Catania, where we are working alongside the dancers of Compagnia Zappalà Danza. Next stop: a first taste of this simmering—if not blazing—performance in Pompeii on 26 & 27 June.
Meanwhile, Space for Dance Art continues at full pace throughout June. Join us for our weekly classes and workshops, and on 20 June our doors will be open all day—for learning and delight—as part of the Blue Zone Festival.
And while rock and bodies alike are melting in Catania, and an eruption at Julidans seems inevitable, there is little chance of cooling down afterwards. Our sights are already set on Amsterdam World Pride, where Space for Dance Art will become an official Pride Hub for Nieuw-West.
One way or another, the coming months are going to be hot.

Premiere L.A.V.A.
— From Pompeï to Julidans
The countdown is on!
On 3 July 2026, we present the new performance L.A.V.A. at Theater Meervaart in Amsterdam. L.A.V.A. immerses you in an intense physical and sonic experience of friction, tension, and subterranean currents: a world of fire, ash, and eruption.
This charged landscape shimmers with contrast and strength, bringing together ICK and Compagnia Zappalà Danza.
Before the premiere, we will present a special preview performance in Pompeii on 26 & 27 June. At this historic site, once devastated by Mount Vesuvius, L.A.V.A. takes on a form specially adapted to its unique location.
Travel to Pompeii for this extraordinary performance, or join us on 3 July for the international premiere at Theater Meervaart in Amsterdam. The performance will also be presented there on 5 July.

— Launch of LavaLive.nl - the online experience
Welcome to the world of L.A.V.A.
Ahead of the preview performances in Pompeii, we are launching the digital publication L.A.V.A. – The Friction Field.
This online environment invites you to lose yourself while always finding yourself somewhere. You may be overwhelmed by fire and ash, experience the sensation of collision or erosion, or discover materials that inspired and informed the performance.
Follow the dancers through rehearsals, listen to background conversations and interviews with the makers, or witness bodies transforming into lava through the latest motion-capture technology.
And when the ashes of the performance have settled, L.A.V.A. Live will remain online as a living archive.

SPACE FOR DANCE ART
Space for Dance Art & World Pride Amsterdam

We’re proud to announce that Space for Dance Art will be one of the official Pride Hubs during WorldPride: an inclusive space for performances, connection, and gathering for the LGBTQIA+ community.
To whet your appetite for what’s to come: the programme will feature, among others, Kaleido, a campy queer collective of artists and performers known for creating delightfully absurd experiences.
Their work draws inspiration from the Radical Faeries, a queer countercultural movement that emerged in the United States in the 1980s as a glitter-covered middle finger to the mainstream gay movement. Since then, the Faeries have spread across the world, drawing on pagan, feminist, ecological, communist, and anarchist traditions.

On 20 June, the doors of Space for Dance Art will be open once again as part of the Blue Zone Festival, which this year forms part of 24 Hours Nieuw-West.
Put on your dancing shoes and join an open class! Choose between Double Skin/Double Mind or We Dance Together, and be sure to explore the media library as well.

Sonified Bodies, Algorithmic Friction
— Performance, workshop, discussion
What happens when a dancer is challenged by a digital counterforce that can recognise, interpret, and translate movement? Can a human performer and a machine-learning system create a performance together? And what creative and ethical conditions would shape such a collaboration?
These questions were at the heart of Sonified Bodies, Algorithmic Friction on 5 June. In a collaboration between ICK and Waag Futurelab, new forms of embodied creativity were explored through performance, workshops, and discussion, at the intersection of human movement and AI.

European Dance Development Network
— General Assembly
As a member of the European Dance Development Network (EDN)—a network dedicated to fostering and advocating for the structural development of the dance sector—ICK will take part in the EDN General Assembly and Think-In in Hamburg on 16 and 17 June.
In recent months, ICK has also been actively involved in the EDN Digital Task Force, exploring the possibilities of digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovation within the field of dance.

On 3 & 4 July, they will perform their piece I Miss Communication at the Poolshoogte festival in Deventer.

Robbeduz & Gal
— Children of Zeus
Dance maker Robbeduz (Robin Nimanong; they/them) and visual artist Valentina Gal (she/her) are creating an installation with water and sculptures together. Their collaboration Children of Zeus emerged from a shared interest in water as a symbol of transformation and healing. Queer ecology offers an alternative way of seeing, one that allows for change and non-fixed identities. Through this way of thinking, the artists reveal different forms of freedom.
On 3 July, this living exhibition will be shown at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.

MOCAP?
|
ICK conducts intensive research into new technologies. We explore the possibilities of virtual reality, attempt to inform AI through movement rather than text, and continuously question why and to what end we do so. Motion capture is a technique we are further developing and applying within our own practice. Can it hold value in the transmission of dance, and can it, in combination with AI, initiate movement? By now, we talk about “MoCap” over coffee breaks with the same ease as we discuss the new fling of the neighbour. But what exactly is motion capture?
