We see the crocuses emerging as cheerful heralds of spring. At the same time, bombs are falling on Tehran.
Lightness and heaviness exist side by side. We feel both—in the world, and in our bodies.
We do not leave these contrasts behind at the door of our studio. On the contrary, we begin right there: in the Double Skin / Double Mind classes—open for everyone—we stretch the inner space. We listen to what is moving there. We take time to breathe.
We carry that attention with us as we move toward ICK Fest on 28 March at ICK Dans Amsterdam, where, researchers, dancers, and acrobats will take you along in their view of the body and the world.
And then further on—Catania beckons. There we will dive into L.A.V.A. and perform WE, the BREATH at Scenario Pubblico.
So if you missed the Dutch tour: pack your suitcase.
Plenty of opportunities, then, to come and breathe with us somewhere along the way.

ICK Fest #8
— Meervaart 28 March
On 28 March, the time has come: the beginning of spring is marked by the annual ICK Fest.
At Meervaart you can enjoy a dazzling and challenging edition, looking at past, present, and future.
The programme features a first presentation in the Netherlands of F.A.S.L. فاصل in a double bill with a brand-new version of BOLERO, as well as a new performance by Collectief MAMM: RUIM.
Join us for a full evening programme in which you will encounter vibrant exhibition visuals throughout the corridors and foyer. And it wouldn’t be ICK Fest without stepping onto the floor yourself: you can once again take part in our virtual dance game REPLAY!

Research L.A.V.A.
— On the mountain
In the lead-up to the new international co-production L.A.V.A., we would like to take you behind the scenes. At the beginning of March, we conducted field research and travelled to Mount Etna. At the volcanological centre in Catania, volcanoes around the world are digitally monitored. Earthly tremors appear as real-time data.

ICK Dans Amsterdam invites contemporary dancers with strong technical skills to apply for private auditions to join the ensemble.
We are looking for dancers who are curious about the intuitively moving body and open to new, innovative forms in the performing arts. ICK values diversity and welcomes dancers of all nationalities and ethnicities.

We Dance Together

The new series of We Dance Together workshops, starting on 9 March, sold out in no time. Good news: a new edition will take place before the summer. Keep an eye on our schedule in May.
We Dance Together is a workshop series for anyone who wants to move—young or old, with or without experience. For eight evenings, the joy of dancing together is central, while you get to meet professional choreographers and artists.
The upcoming (unfortunately fully booked) edition is led by Elisa Zuppini. In her workshop De.sy.re, participants explore how movement emerges when the body organizes itself. Such exciting promise!

SPACE FOR DANCE ART
Double Skin/Double Mind - Ballet - Modern Technique
— Dance classes @ Space for Dance Art
March is full of opportunities to dance at Space for Dance Art!
In addition to workshops like We Dance Together, you can join Double Skin/Double Mind (DS/DM) open classes every Tuesday and Wednesday. These classes introduce you to ICK’s unique methodology, which is also the training used by the ICK dancers.
In March, there will also be DS/DM classes for advanced dancers, led by Barbara Meneses Gutierrez, one of ICK’s original dancers. In addition, there are classes in modern technique & countertechnique, and you can participate in the company’s ballet classes, which are only open to advanced dancers.

Intuition Machine
— DigitALL supports new research
8 March, marks a new chapter of Intuition Machine at Space for Dance Art
The installation features a holographic body and emerges from the AI Toolbox, developed within the European project PREMiERE. In this project, artists and scientists collaborate around artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR).
With support from DigitALL, we are further developing the movement-based AI behind Intuition Machine. The installation is being tested and presented in theaters and museums. The knowledge generated from this process is shared with the performing arts and digital culture communities.
The kick-off takes place with partners LI-MA, IRCAM, Nxt Museum, AHK IDlab, Jorrit Tamminga and Nathan Marcus.

Movement Research Labs
— New publication
The Movement Research Labs are a research programme of ICK, developed together with dance researcher Scott deLahunta. Choreographers and dancers are given the space to deepen their movement and dance language, with input from international experts in dance notation, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
During intensive five-day sessions, participants work peer-to-peer and explore the relationship between physical and verbal language.
For Movement Research Labs #4, an online publication has now been released for the first time. It includes conversations with Antonella Fittipaldi, Eloy Cojal, Roberta Maimone, Henry Rodrigues, Sierra Mann and Niek Vanoosterweyck.
This edition was guided by Suzan Tunca and Scott deLahunta.

Harmonic Dissonance
— Brain Awareness
On 16 March, Suzan Tunca and Suzanne Dikker present their experimental research on synchron(icit)y
The research emerges from the project Harmonic Dissonance – Synchronicity. In this project, Suzanne Dikker and Matthias Oostrik, together with sound designer Arnoud Traa and ICK, explored how people attune to one another.
Both dancers and visitors wore EEG devices that measured their brainwaves. As they moved, they responded to audiovisual reflections of their own movements.
When do brains begin to synchronize?
During Brain Awareness Week in Rotterdam, Dikker and Tunca will present the Night Talk Monday: Synchronizing the Dancing Brain, sharing insights from their research.

Collectief MAMM
— RUIM on Tour
The new performance RUIM by Collectief MAMM will be presented in various theatres throughout May.
One reviewer already found themselves running out of adjectives: dazzling musicality, virtuosity in movement, and effortless humour.
RUIM is a performance about the maddening housing crisis. Four twenty-somethings search for a way forward through raw acrobatics and boundless imagination.
You can experience the performance in May in cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, and Alkmaar.

Sabbath
— Queerness & Witchery
In 2024, Niek Wagenaar was in residence within ICK’s New Adventures programme, where he created a first version of Sabbath. The performance is an ode to the outsider, a celebration of queerness and the power of witchcraft. In this dance work, Wagenaar and his dance company Nymphs revisit the traditional image of the witch. The witch is no longer a figure of fear and exclusion, but a symbol of empowerment, resistance and self-discovery.
The performance returns to the stage: 24 April in Amsterdam.

The Obsessors
— Exorcism Show
This ICK co-production with provocateur, director, and Roma -and queer- artist Thais Di Marco is inspired by the ancient Umbanda ritual of “desobsessão”. In this Brazilian practice, people are freed from “lost souls” believed to trigger obsessive behaviour. These rituals take place weekly in public sessions.
For The Obsessors, Thais Di Marco uses their method Retelling Structures, in which well-known stories are shifted and re-enacted. Through humour and sharp theatrical interventions, space emerges to reveal social conflicts — and perhaps to release them as well.
The performance can be seen on 17 & 18 April in Frascati – Amsterdam!

— Fernando Troya in RADION
On 12 March, ICK Dans Amsterdam will be present with a presentation of Fernando Troya’s A PELO during the Brainwash Night “safe and sound”.
Alongside performers, philosophers, writers, and researchers engaging with themes such as protection, conflict, autonomy, and connectedness, Troya adapts his acclaimed performance especially for a club setting.

Crocus [ˈkroʊkəs]
noun
The ground is cold, the trees bare. Then the crocus appears: a purple shimmer in an empty landscape, a first sign of spring, movement after stillness, hope breaking through the hardened earth. Much later, when the exuberant blooming has passed and the harvest is in, the crocus returns once more with deep red-golden styles and stigmas. In Iran they use them to colour the rice gold.
