In short
In 2009, Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten combined their artistic, production and research activities in ICK Dans Amsterdam, the International Choreographic Arts Centre Amsterdam, a platform for contemporary dance. Under their vision, we create international productions, support young makers and to realize education and research in dance.
Since 2021, ICK has been located in Space for Dance Art, a place where performances, research, education, debates, workshops and symposia come together. Space for Dance Art functions as a dynamic centre where dance engages in dialogue with other disciplines, technology and social issues.
ICK develops projects in collaboration with partners at home and abroad, most recently with Scenario Pubblico / Compagnia Zappalà Danza (IT), Ballet de L’Opera de Tunis (TN) and Philharmonie de Paris (FR)
ICK is internationally renowned for its innovative approach to dance, which recognises the body as a carrier of stories, meanings and physical intelligence. The company is constantly searching for new forms of physical presence and audience engagement, as well as ways to integrate technology into choreography. As well as creating and presenting performances, ICK focuses on talent development, participation projects and knowledge sharing, with the aim of reaching a broad and diverse audience.
Dancers
The dance ensemble of ICK is formed by unique dancers. From this core group, the various choreographers affiliated with ICK create high-profile dance productions. The quality of the ICK Ensemble is formed on the one hand by the space that is given to the individuality of each dancer and on the other hand by the deeply rooted Double Skin / Double Mind-method developed by Greco and Scholten. The dancers incorporate this specific basis, which focuses on a strong body awareness and a virtuoso dance quality, in the interpretation of the choreographers’ work.
Since 2019, the ICK Ensemble has been enriched each season with young, talented dancers who are part of ICK Next, ICK’s junior company. With this learning trajectory we give dancers who are in training or just graduated the possibility to gain work experience in the rehearsal studio and on stage.
ICK Academy
The ICK Academy investigates the value of dance in society. The research projects lead to performances, installations and films. We share our knowledge and methods with schools and children, the public and with other dance companies, in productions and workshops.
The ICK-Academy is curious, challenges the status quo of dance, questions dance and archives the memory of the dance because Where does dance rest when it has been performed?
The research at the ICK Academy is inspired by the practice of choreographers affiliated with ICK. The results have an effect on their own makeup, but also on the dancers and the audience. Think of talent development and educational projects about the expressiveness of the body for young and old.
Space for Dance Art
Space for Dance Art – A Culture Hub In Motion
Since 2021, ICK (Internationaal Choreografisch Kunstcentrum) has been based in the Space for Dance Art, the iconic brutalist building of Amsterdam Nieuw-West – known for its striking concrete architecture. Here, ICK has found its home, and together they form a platform for participation, presentation, creation and research. Audiences, artists, dancers and scientists come together to experience a shared movement language.
Deeply rooted in Nieuw-West, Space for Dance Art works closely with local organizations. Its community is growing and actively seeks new collaborations in the district. The aim is to cultivatea cultural ecosystem that connects local residents with the international network of ICK.
Interdisciplinary at its core, Space for Dance Art hosts four equipped studios for emerging makers, curates exhibitions and symposia, maintains an updated mediatheque, and presents performances, experiments, and community events. The studios are open for rentals and external programming.
The agenda of Space for Dance Art integrates artistic creation with community activities, talent development, and research.
Dance classes such as Double Skin/Double Mind are held for both beginners and professionals. The movement practice of ICK Guest Artists is passed on in workshops such as We Dance Together. The creative process of the ICK productions is shared in previews during the Open Rehearsals. At the research events of the ICK Academy, the Intuitive Body enters into dialogue with the sciences and new technologies.
In 2025, more than 1,200 participants came to Space for Dance Art to move, explore, organize, feel and reflect. At Space for Dance Art, artistic excellence goes hand in hand with public participation – and dance becomes a way of thinking, meeting, and imagining the future together.
