Can you learn it?

The Devil’s Staircase is a short, rhythmic dance sequence from L.A.V.A., the performance in which the choreographic worlds of Emio Greco | Pieter C. Scholten and Roberto Zappalà come together. In L.A.V.A., different physical languages meet in a powerful dialogue about rhythm, community and cultural exchange.

Now we are taking one fragment from the performance and giving it a life of its own: The Devil’s Staircase.

A compact choreographic sequence of steps, directions, repetitions and rhythm. On stage, it is part of a larger whole. Outside the theatre, it takes on a new life.

ICK challenges dancers, dance lovers, students, amateurs and anyone curious about movement to learn The Devil’s Staircase for themselves. Not to copy it perfectly, but to experience what happens when choreography travels from one body to another.
The dancers of ICK-Next were the first to take on the challenge. They had to learn the sequence themselves. Their first attempts, mistakes, repetitions and breakthroughs became the starting point for the challenge.
Now it’s your turn. ICK challenges dancers, dance lovers, students, amateurs and curious movers to learn The Devil’s Staircase themselves.

Watch the sequence. Break it down step by step. Try it slowly. Find the rhythm. Lose the count. Start again. And discover the moment when the movement is no longer simply something you are trying to imitate, but something your body begins to understand.
The Devil’s Staircase travels with L.A.V.A. and will pop up in workshops, events and encounters surrounding the performance. In this way, a single choreographic fragment can continue to spread: from performer to audience, from studio to street, from city to city.

You can learn the original sequence, dance it together with others, or eventually create your own variation.
