ICK Dans Amsterdam would not be the same without its volunteers. What moves them?
We asked Monika Lovas.
How long have you been a volunteer at ICK Dans Amsterdam?
I’ve been volunteering at ICK since July 2025, starting with the Rhino Dance Marathon, which was truly an unforgettable evening.
How did you end up there?
Very simply and accessibly—through the newsletter. Keep an eye on it, folks!
What do you do as a volunteer and how often?
I especially enjoy supporting productions and related exhibitions, or welcoming audiences and guests. At the same time, there are often ad hoc tasks—from crowd control to cleaning up or stepping in at the merchandise desk.
I don’t volunteer very often yet—every few months, mainly around events. That may change; I’m definitely open to doing more.
What does volunteering bring you?
The team at ICK—dancers, staff, and management—is incredibly motivated and deeply connected to one another, and that’s very meaningful to witness.
A wonderful bonus is that, when possible, you get to watch the performances. That remains moving every single time.
What did you think of the last volunteer gathering?
I truly had a pinch-me moment. I first encountered the work of Emio Greco in the early 2000s in Budapest, when he was on tour. I saw Bolero and Double Points there, and they’ve stayed with me ever since—they made a deep impression.
If you had told me back then that in 2026 I would be here in Amsterdam, in the home of his company, taking a class with his rehearsal director, I wouldn’t have believed you. And yet—some dreams do come true.
